Quand Andy Warhol publie ses photos en 1982 dans le magazine “Interview”, David LaChapelle n’a que 19 ans. Aujourd’hui, il fait partie des plus grands noms de la photographie contemporaine. Il réalise une série de portraits choc avec les plus grandes stars du showbiz. A travers des compositions toujours plus baroques, David LaChapelle n'hésite pas à revisiter les œuvres classiques de Michel-Ange ou Léonard de Vinci et à passer de l’iconographie religieuse à la pornographie. Derrière la caméra, il réalise des clips (Elton John, Britney Spears, Norah Jones), mais aussi un documentaire,"Rize", sorti au cinéma en 2004, sur le Krumping, danse née dans les bas quartiers de Los Angeles.
