Vers 1898, à leur sortie du pénitencier de Yuma, dans l'Arizona, Peter van Hoek, dit "le Hollandais", s'associe à John McBain pour exploiter le filon inexploité d'une mine d'or de Prescott. Les deux hommes ont en effet été trahis par Cyril Lounsberry, le propriétaire de la mine. Tout en montant l'opération de récupération, les deux s'amourachent l'un de la maîtresse de Lounsberry, l'autre d'une ancienne prostituée mexicaine. Une escalade de trahisons va alors compliquer leurs plans.
