Eté 1943. Carlo, fils d'un dignitaire fasciste, passe des vacances loin de la guerre, à Riccione. Il y rencontre Roberta, jeune veuve d'un officier de marine et mère d'une petite fille. Ils tombent follement amoureux. Le 25 juillet, la radio annonce la chute de Mussolini, le peuple envahit la rue et le père de Carlo doit fuir. Il veut entraîner son fils, mais Carlo choisit de rester avec Roberta malgré le danger.Un soir, pris par une patrouille, ils décident d'aller se cacher chez Roberta, à Rovigo. Mais l'attaque aérienne du train qui les y emmène les sépare...
