En 2005, le chorégraphe Angelin Preljocaj se rend à Cologne dans les studios de Karlheinz Stockhausen. Le compositeur veut lui faire écouter sa dernière oeuvre, Sonntags Abschied, et souhaite la lui confier. Séduit, le chorégraphe accepte cette deuxième incursion dans l'oeuvre du compositeur allemand, qui lui avait déjà inspiré Helikopter en 2001. Sonntags Abschied est la création d'un homme très croyant. Conçue pour cinq synthétiseurs, elle orchestre, dans une complexe alchimie de sons aux tempos différents, les multiples palpitations de l'univers. Cette partition mystique inspire au chorégraphe l'idée d'un paradis perdu.
