Deux banquiers de la ville de Goldspring sont les organisateurs d’attaques de diligences afin de garder l’or pour leur propre compte. Pour arriver à leurs fins, ils ont à leur service deux bandes : celle de Lasky et celle de Mendoza. Un jour, ils décident de monter les deux bandes l’une contre l’autre et d’attendre qu’il ne reste pas un bandit de vivants pour enfin partir avec l’or. Seulement arrive un aventurier, Sartana, que personne ne connaît, bien décidé à faire place nette de toute cette racaille lui-même et à garder l’or pour lui seul…
