Victor Colinet est retraité des chemins de fer. Passionné de musique, il consacre tout son temps libre à jouer et forme avec deux amis un joyeux trio à cordes. Deux fois par semaine, Victor se recueille sur la tombe d'un illustre compositeur italien, Attilio Alboretti, qu'un bel adagio a rendu célèbre. Un beau jour, le fantôme du musicien interpelle Victor et lui propose de lui dicter les notes de quelques mélodies. Le trio, conquis, commence par interpréter les morceaux lors de galas de bienfaisance et remporte un franc succès auprès du public. Un producteur propose alors à Victor d'enregistrer un disque...
