Apprécié du public, le vétéran Otto Kullberg est un comédien que son alcoolisme rend souvent ingérable. Afin de ne pas compromettre la production de son nouveau film, où il incarne un vieux dandy aux prises avec une jeunette, il doit accepter une situation inédite. Toutes les scènes où il apparaît seront tournées une seconde fois, avec le concours d'un remplaçant, Arno, un acteur de théâtre inconnu. Otto sait désormais qu'il doit donner le meilleur de lui-même, tandis que son double s'acquitte de sa position ingrate tout en s'efforçant de ne pas laisser passer la chance de sa vie. Oppressé par la situation et la tartufferie de son metteur en scène, Otto cherche désespérément une présence amicale sur le plateau.
